Charlie Daniels Doesn't Consider Himself Country

Charlie Daniels admitted in a recent interview with the Merced Sun-Star that he never considered himself a country artist.

"I never claimed to be country," Charlie said in the interview. "I never claimed to be anything. I think people kind of categorized my music for 30 or 40 years. But I've never laid claim to a genre. I call it American music. We definitely play country music, but we play jazz, rock and gospel. I refuse to be categorized because I think that puts blinders on you."

As far as mainstream music goes, Daniels says he really doesn't take part in listening to today's music on the radio.

"I don't listen to the radio, I really don't. That's not a derogatory statement -- I don't understand the music anymore."

However, one thing he can say he is a true supporter of is the military. The singer recently released a new song titled, "Let 'em Win or Bring 'em Home," which conveys his stance on the U.S. war initiatives.
